A rabbit show is where people bring there rabbits to be judged ,by a licensed American Rabbit Breeders Association judge. At rabbit shows you will find a variety of breeds and variations of rabbits. Along with there being hundreds of rabbits you will also find vendors that bring all sorts of things to sell. Rabbit shows are always a fun and inviting place. We always recommend for people to go to a rabbit show just to learn on top of meeting all the amazing people.
A single fryer rabbit is typically a rabbit out of the meat pen you are raising for your county livestock show or fair, Single fryers are typically the rabbits in the group that grew to fast to be shown with the other rabbits in your meat pen ,or there is just to much inconsistency between that rabbit and the three your putting on the table to show, One great thing about single fryers is they give you a second chance to win a premium or go to a premium sale, That means if you buy a Meatpens and have one that grows to quick you can double your chances to win something.
A meat pen is a set of three rabbits. Rabbits in this pen of three must be considered commercial by the American Rabbit Breeders Association, Meat pens are a great way to get started in showing rabbits ,because you get to see how fast they mature ,and you can show them when there older as breeding rabbits. The ARBA (American Rabbit Breeders Association) Standard of Perfection has set points systems in place to judge a meat rabbit. Meat rabbits are generally judged on quality and condition of flesh condition coming first ,and coat and color comes second.
The reason good quality meat rabbits are important is that when you process a rabbit you want to have the most useable meat possible. Another reason you want good quality meat rabbits instead of a normal meat rabbit ,is that an animal with good lines consumes less feed. The less feed consumption needed to grow a rabbit out to processing size means you are saving yourself money and time. Good meat rabbits are also bred and raised so that they will grow quicker than your standard cross breed or TAMUK rabbit.
Pedigrees have a few purposes ,but by any means they aren't required for you to show a rabbit. One purpose of a pedigree is to keep track of lineage, weights and varieties. It's important to keep track of varieties ,because you need to know what a rabbit carries if you are interested in breeding. If you know what a rabbit carries the greater chance you have at producing showable colors and nicer typed animals. When it comes to meat pen or commercial rabbits pedigrees are typically not given or used. One main reason for this ,is that they are bred for type versus color most of the time.
A breeding rabbit has a different standard than a meat rabbit. Meat rabbits are judged to the commercial standard set forth by the ARBA (American Rabbit Breeders Association) Standard of Perfection. The commercial standard set forth by ARBA primarily focus on growth rates and width of loin ,however both topline and overall type are important. The ARBA commercial standard does not focus on coat or color as much as the ARBA breed standard. The ARBA commercial standard is broken up into three section. The most common two standards we see used at county or local fairs is the meat pen standard and the single fryer standard. The reason those are typically the two most common standards used on a local level is ,because meat pens are typically bought in groups of four to six rabbits. When you have a meat pen consisting of 3 rabbits that leave one to three rabbits leftover ,that is where single fryers come in. The third class under the ARBA commercial standard is the roaster class which is where rabbits are judged on meat quality ,and they are over ten weeks of age.
Meat pens are a great learning opportunity and experience for all new and incoming exhibitors. Meat pen rabbits have a few perks that your typical breed rabbit will not. One of the main perks when it comes to meat pen or single fryer rabbits is that they tend to have higher premiums ,and go to a premium sale. One of the best perks that comes with purchasing your meat pen rabbit from us is that after the show you have the option to sell your back to us for market price. That way you don't have to worry about finding a new home for your 4-h or FFA project. Another plus is you can keep rabbits out of your meat pen project to show at a breed show for the following year.
Black New Zealands are one of our favorite varieties we raise. We like our black NZ ,because they are very consistent color wise so it is always easy to make a pen out of four or five of them.
We like the flashy color that comes with our broken NZ. They come out of our black program. Don't worry about consistency with these color wise as long as there broken that's all that matters.
Our White NZ are great color and consistency wise. They have awesome type and they are super gentle. They are definitely one of our favorites and bring personality to the barn.
.The biggest thing with meat pen rabbits is making sure they have quality feed all the time and clean drinking water.
Meat Pen rabbits can be kept both indoors and outside. If kept inside we recommend a cage with urine guards, a pan and wheels for the cage. We also recommend that you use ceramic crocks or EZ crocks.
If you are going to keep your market pen rabbits outside the biggest thing to remember is they need shelter from the elements and a wind block. We do recommend that meat pens be brought inside a garage during inclement winter weather.
Meatpens should generally gain 1/2lb per week once you receive your market pen.
The date is approaching fast and we’re making preparations. Don’t miss out and reserve your county project today!
